This is our first coffee from Tanzania, and what a treat it is. A single estate AA preparation lot, from a 600 hectare coffee farmland and forest preserve along the rim of Northern Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater, the largest unbroken caldera in the world, full of fertile open range that has been a UNESCO world heritage site since 1979. It produces a stunning variety of beautiful profiles.
Processing for their AA grade involves a brief cherry fermentation of 24 hours after picking. The cherry is then de-pulped, fermented for 36-72 hours, shade dried for 3 days, and finished by drying in full sun for another week.
This is a silky full bodied cup that has a rich base of semisweet chocolate and toasted caramel at its core. This develops into notes of vanilla, honeydew, with a hint of sweet herbaceous-ness on the end. It is clean and silky, with an orange blossom acidity for a liveliness that is not overpowering. There are some delicate jasmine florals in there too, which flow into a long honey like finish. If you’ve never tried a Tanzanian coffee before, this is a chance for a first that you won’t regret.
